President’s March Message: The month of March is especially significant to all women as the entire month is devoted to celebrating the history of women and our impact on society and the overall development of life in our country. Historically, the initial celebration of a special day to recognize women occurred in 1911 but it was not until 1978 when the Sonoma, California school dis-trict celebrated women’s accomplishments for an entire week that the idea became more universal. Later, Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation making March 8th Women’s History Week. Finally, in 1987, Congress expanded the event to the entire month of March. Today, it is widely accepted and I would en-courage each of you to consider celebrating women by talking with, or meeting with, a special woman who has impacted you sometime in your life. If you are like me, some of those who have personally inspired me are no longer around, which makes it even more essential to rec-ognize those women whom we value or who have valued us in the past.
In our society today, there is great emphasis placed on success and great pressure on encourag-ing women to become successful. But the question then becomes: “how does one measure success?” There are many possible measures, of course: educational, professional and person-al. While these are all valid and important measures, how do we identify personal success? Sahkespeare says, “To thine own self be true”. Based on this idea, can not success be identi-fied with any woman who has made a genuine effort to make the life of those around her bet-ter? Is it not possible that success is in the eye of the beholder and that we should be recogniz-ing all those women who give encouragement and kindness to others without expecting any sort of recognition or reward? This is not to diminish those whose accomplishments bring praise but to also include those quiet women essential to helping others get success. Being kind to those we encounter is a true mark of character and success.
Perhaps you may wish to create a personal list of women you view as successful. Is your list really complete if it only includes famous people? Have you included a few quiet women who also warrant being called successful?
On another note, please check out our new website if you have not already done so.

As we rush into March, may the winds of March be kind to you and bring the soft breezes of spring later in the month.
Sincerely,
Ann E. Wolf, CWC President
