CURRENT / UPCOMING Outreach Activities:
DECEMBER 2024 OUTREACH ACTIVITY
November 4th, approximately 2:45 p.m. finds an Outreach member driving west on 3rd street, suddenly stopping at the cross section of 3rd and Conover Street... What prompted this trip? Was it something interesting she had heard at the luncheon concerning the history of CWC? And what was this about Katherine Wright, sister to the Famous Wright brothers? And membership in the 500's with a one-year waiting period to join?
So many, many questions were answered in the excellent program "The College Women's Club History: 117 Years Old, Still Young at Heart"!
Speakers Judy Holt, Jean Short, and Willa Jean Smalley, presented the results of their thorough and exhaustive research into our 117 years of existence. Our core values were on display including service to others whether outer communities or our own CWC members. Our strong fellowship has existed from our founding in 1907 till now.
Oh, yes, West 3rd and Conover... CWC sponsored a Settlement House at that location for families in need from 1920-1925. The house is gone but the Drew Health Center stands appropriately in its place. Katherine Wright was our president in 1910 and yes, at one time there were 500 members with many study groups. A power point presentation will be shown at the December luncheon and many artifacts will be displayed.
A member shared her feelings about being a member of such a remarkable and worthwhile club: "Membership in CWC is a gift to myself" -- and an honor! CWC members truly are making each day a story worth telling, for 117 years!
Outreach is thinking about sweetness this month! We had a delightful taste of the history of our club in November. We are looking forward to a serving of the story of Esther Price chocolates and candy in December. As you are thinking of how to make each day a story worth telling, and how try to spread a little sweetness in your world?

October 2024 Outreach:
Welcome back to our CWC members! Our theme for 2024-2025 is "Make Each Day a Story Worth Telling"!
How? Start your day with mindfulness about the day ahead. What story do I want my day to tell? Is there a theme on which I want to focus? Is there more of the plot I want to unfold today? How do I want to finish today?
A member tells about one day in her story. She (let's call her Betty) had decided some time ago to go through her fall clothes and donate them while still in season. In doing so, off she went to the St. Vincent de Paul Hotel. Betty knew families who stayed at that shelter often came with only the clothes on their back. Was Betty's story worth telling? Yes! It tells a story of empathy and generosity towards those in need. And how was Betty's day finished? She says, "I really made a difference today and I feel good all over!"
Let each of us "Make each day a story worth telling"!

May 2024 Outreach:
The Outreach committee would like to thank our generous members for their donations totaling $824 for Seeds of Hope at the April 2024 meeting. As members learned, the donations will be put to very important use. Many of the women among us have lost loved ones. Some of those loved ones, and even some of those who survived through that loss, have been supported and cared for by Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton. Our May guest presenter will be Maureen Swartz from Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton, whose mission states: “Together, we help people live more fully during life's final months.” Since 1978, volunteers and staff have provided comforting services to patients with life-limiting illnesses and assistance to their family members. CWC members are welcome to support this important non-profit by bringing donations to the May meeting, or by donating through the secure link at https://www.ohioshospice.org/give/. Another option is to mail checks to Ohio’s Hospice, 7575 Paragon Road, Dayton, Ohio 45459.
April 2024 Outreach:
“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” Desmond Tutu
Providing hope in a variety of ways to area foster families is the mission of the non-profit, Seeds of Hope Ohio. Katie Vasil, executive director, will be our presenter in April. She will introduce us to her organization, which provides much-needed support to foster families in the greater Dayton area and surrounding counties: physical, emotional, and through advocacy. Our Outreach committee asks that members consider monetary donations to support this important cause. Members may bring checks to the meeting, or if desired, donations in the form of a check can be made out and mailed to: Seeds of Hope Ohio, 1841 W. Main Street #110, Troy OH 45373

March 2024 Outreach:
Plato may have said this best, “Kindness is more than deeds. It’s an attitude, an expression, a look, a touch. It is anything that lifts up another person.” We seek to be kind to one another, but how can we extend kindness into our homes? There are many small gestures, such as placing an inviting candy dish by our front door, having a beautiful candle light up a room, providing drinks and tasty snacks as friends and families leave our home, to always making available favorite drinks for our guests. If we think about it, thoughtfulness is behind all acts of kindness and making people feel welcome. Maya Angelou believes, “People will forgive what you said, people will forget what you did, but people never forget how you made them feel.”

Ready to light up the faces of the children who are in Dayton Children's Hospital on Valentine's Day? Members are asked to write a short message and sign children's Valentines bringing them to the February meeting; the cards will be delivered to the hospital. Allternately, cards may be mailed directly to the hospital: Dayton Children's Hospital, 1 Children's Plaza, Dayton, OH 45404. Everyone loves to receive mail! May we continue our generous response to the outreach activities. Let's brighten these children's days with greetings of love! And how very very kind will that be!

December 2023 Outreach:
Family visiting during the holidays? Rather than starting the conversation with "What's up?", might we make a few suggestions for starters?
Here is an update on the on-going project suggested in the October Outreach (below) regarding seeking out worthy organizations which are in need of donations. We are pleased to report that four bags of clothing were delivered to the YWCA on West Third Street in Dayton, and two bags of clothing, bed sheets, and shoes went to St. Vincent de Paul Hotel on Patterson Blvd. Food items were donated to church pantries, and toothbrushes and paste were given to Blue Star Mothers chapter in Kettering. We may not see the results of our kindness, but every bit of positive energy that we contribute to the world makes it a better place for all of us! Thank you!

- What made you smile today?
- Tell me something you know today that you didn't know yesterday?
- How was someone kind to you today?

October 2023 Outreach:
"Be Happy!" Who hasn't heard those words and who doesn't want to be happy? Kindness can bring happiness!
We have long been hearing from charitable groups the need for nonperishable foods but there are other items in desperate need, some of which may not come to mind. Some examples are from the Saint Vincent DePaul Society "Fill the House" drive. Gently used furniture is requested as are towels, pots and pans and utensils for underserved families who are trying to make a home for themselves. (Saint Vincent DePaul has trucks that will make such donations easier.) The ladies of the Christ Child Society assemble infant layettes for which other groups call. Vandalia has a local pantry which asks for monetary donations Northmont FISH requests clothing and food and they prepare baskets for holiday seasons. The Aspire Church at 51 Best St in Dayton is on board to receive toiletries for their pantry. The various places of worship have pantries that need diapers, baby formula and feminine products besides food and clothing. These examples are by no means an exhaustive list. The need is great! Kindness brings happiness, not only to the recipients, but also to the ones who give. Be Happy!

June 2023 Outreach: As this year comes to an end, let's look back at our outreach activities for 2022-2023:
- October 2022: Our membership donated 60 boxes of cereal to Good Neighbor House, a nonprofit located in Dayton, that aids local underserved families.
- November 2022: After listening to a presentation about the waste of perfectly edible fruits and vegetables, our membership donated $350 to Access to Excess, a nonprofit that gathers these food items to help the underserved local families.
- December 2022: Our membership was entertained by the Salem Quartet and reminded to be kind and generous to any group that was aiding the underserved.
- February 2023: A Montgomery County Juvenile Court program representative CASA spoke to our membership telling them of the advocates who speak for children who cannot speak for themselves. Remember to speak for those who need our intervention.
- March 2023: Our membership was reminded to speak with compassion and generosity for those who cannot speak for themselves.
- April 2023: The history of street naming in our local area taught us when we name ourselves and others to do so with kindness and understanding.
- May 2023: After a year of stressing kindness and compassion, we have created a Legacy of Kindness for family and friends to follow!
May 2023 Outreach:
How well do we recall from the past the sayings of family members? Is it more likely the kind actions of family and friends that more quickly come to mind? One member was asked for some memories of kind actions: my mother packaging coffee, flour, sugar to be sent to my grandparents during hard times. Another member recalls her dietitian mother volunteering at her church food pantry for over twenty years, ensuring healthy food for those who lived in a food desert. A third member vividly remembers her mother calming an injured neighbor girl who suffered a dislocated kneecap and was able to coax it into place. By the way, that member chose nursing as a profession!
Cherish that legacy of kindness and carry it on!
April 2023 Outreach:
Fortunately our Program Chair was able to find a fill-in speaker at the last minute for our scheduled speaker. That new speaker informed us about the background of street naming in Dayton. That prompted an Outreach Committee member to remember and reflect on a quote from the children's book Morning Girl by Michael Dorris: "Names are strange and special gifts. There are names you give to yourself and names you show to the world, names that stay for a short while and names that remain with you forever, names that come from things you do and names you receive as presents from other people. If your name is true, it is who you are." What names do you give to yourself? What names do you give to others before you really know them? Whatever you chose, either for yourself or others, let them be given with compassion and kindness.

March 2023 Outreach:
Ask yourself, "How can CWC members continue the compassionate message the CASA speaker? What can we do that is of a practical nature to advocate on behalf of a child?" Perhaps we could read to a child or even donate children's books to a school library or to the Good Neighbor House (for whom we collected boxes of cereal in the past)? Outreach committee members will deliver any books brought to the CWC meeting for you!
Perhaps you could knit a pair of mittens and a hat to donate to your church's charity collection?
Perhaps you could contact a local school and pay off an overdue lunch account?
Kindness is highly contagious! Don't wait to catch it from others; be the carrier!

February 2023 Outreach:
Our speaker from CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), a program of the Montgomery County Juvenile Court, represents trained volunteers who are the voices for children who cannot speak for themselves - the children in the child protection system. Perhaps the volunteers resolved one New Year’s Day to speak for children whose voices have been silenced. Have you made any New Year’s resolutions?
Here a few we have made: 1.) Contact someone you can't be with to see how they are; 2.) Listen wholeheartedly to others without judging them; 3.) Be generous. Feed someone with food, love, or kindness. Let us all resolve to have the kindest 2023!

December 2022 Outreach:
The Outreach Committee wishes to thank CWC members for their generous support of The Good Neighbor House by donating sixty (60) boxes of cereal to their pantry and the Access to Excess organization by contributing $350 to their effort to provide healthy fruits and vegetables to the underserved of the area. Your compassion for the good works of these organization reflects your own empathy for the people these groups serve. Kindness doesn't really cost a thing...yet it's the richest gift you can give!

November 2022 Outreach:
Statistics suggest shoppers hesitate to buy fruit and vegetables not perfect to the eye. Those pieces of produce the stores toss out. Access to Excess, a local nonprofit, rescues such still wholesome food from stores and restaurants before it goes bad. Then that organization makes it available to people with little or no access to healthy options.
Access to Excess finds extra items from the food industry and makes it accessible to people who need it the most. "We know things: too much food is wasted and too many people are hungry...we also believe in the healing powers of consuming fruit and vegetables...only fair that everyone has access to those delicious foods from the Earth."
If you care to make a monetary donation to Access to Excess a labeled envelope will be at each table. Unable to attend the luncheon? Checks made out to Access to Excess may be sent to 6311 Mantz Avenue, Dayton OH 45417.

April 2022 Outreach:
We all had the “Luck of the Irish” at the March CWC meeting as we once again had the opportunity able to reach out to members we did not know -- all strong women, learning about them and growing new friendships with them! How blessed we are to live in a country where we have the right and opportunity to gather together in peace to interact with guest speakers who enlighten us about deserving causes! As the Irish Blessing says "May God hold you in the hollow of his hand."

March 2022 Outreach:
Who was your Secret Valentine? One of the reasons we joined CWC and other organizations can be to meet new people and make new friends. At the February luncheon, we REACHED OUT and met members we’ve not had a chance to get to know. The more people we know, the more friends we can make.
Speaking of Valentines, what a generous outpouring of Valentine cards for the dear ones at the Dayton Children’s Hospital! Eight gift bags were overflowing with happy wishes for a Valentines Day filled with love! What an inspiration our members are! As you continue to support your favorite place of worship and charities, we thank you for you continued generosity!

April 2020 Outreach
"Food Desert” is, unfortunately, a description we seem to hear more and more often in the news. What is a food desert? It is defined as an urban area in which it is difficult to buy affordable, good quality fresh food. Trotwood, Harrison Township, West Dayton, Springfield are some locations of these food deserts.
The Foodbank, Inc., however, brings food, comfort and hope to hungry families in these food deserts. At the April meeting, we ask that our members bring non-perishable foods and/or checks to purchase items that The Foodbank, Inc. doesn’t have on hand.
(NOTE: Checks should be made out to "The Foodbank, Inc.")
Our CWC members continue to amaze with their generous participation in the donating of items --
from children's books to socks to stuffed animals to baby wipes! Many thanks!

March 2020 Outreach:
Many thanks to CWC members for the more-than-generous response that provided items needed by Brigid's Path. Our speaker, Jane Snyder, drove away with a literal carload of paper towels, baby wipes, snacks, disinfectant wipes, and other items – too many to mention. How overwhelming!
At the March meeting, let us try to notice members we have missed seeing in a while and give a call to say “Hello! How are you?” How about at Tea and Cookies time, we engage in conversation with a member we have yet to know very well. Better yet, a new member or a guest would be delighted to be approached with a smile and a welcome to CWC!

February 2020 Outreach:
Thank you to club members for your generosity in donating stuffed animals to CARE house at both the November and December meetings. We received a very nice thank you letter from Libby Nicholson, founding director, expressing her gratitude for our organization’s donation and support. |
Many of us have experienced the devastating effects of drug addiction through friends, co-worker’s families and perhaps our own families. Children are the most vulnerable as they have no voice in the matter and can not seek help on their own. Our February meeting features Brigid’s Path, a newborn recovery center for babies born drug exposed. It is also a place where non-judgmental support and education is provided for mothers to improve healthy family outcomes.
The outreach committee kindly seeks your assistance in supporting the mission of Brigid’s Path by bringing a donation to the February meeting. Several items that are needed immediately and are convenient to bring to the meeting are: healthy snack items for the family kitchenette, pens, unscented disinfectant wipes, paper towels, liquid dish detergent. To learn more about Brigid’s Path please go to www.brigidspath.org. To see a complete list of items that can be donated click “contribute” in the upper right corner of the home page.

DECEMBER 2019: Members received more Kindness cards. (They were encouraged to give a card to someone who has just completed a random act of kindness on behalf of the member or friend.) Spreading the holiday spirit was encouraged.
NOVEMBER 2019: Members brought stuffed animals to the meeting; the animals were donated to Care House for the comfort of children in crisis situations.
OCTOBER 2019: ACTS OF KINDNESS. Cards were provided for members to take with them to give to someone who has been kind to them. (Someone opening a door or letting you go first at the grocery checkout or giving you a compliment, etc.) Your kindness card will bring a smile to someone's face after the gesture.
