President’s May Message: May is a happy month. The tax season is over for another year! For children, May signals the promise that summer vacation is in the near future. The weather begins to stabilize and we have soft nights and beautiful flowers, including lilacs, peonies and roses. May is associated with an abundance of special events including graduations, weddings, proms and family get-togethers. These events remind us of memories we have stored away to create a collage
which blends those events with others that we now realize had great impact on our lives. The chance meeting of a person who eventually became a lifetime partner, the decision about schools and career choices and the discovery of new friends over the years all combine to form the past which leads to our current present. It is important to hold on to those memories but at the same time, to be open to the discovery of new options and not be afraid to risk changes. In particular, as we age we need to guard against becoming stagnant and unyielding. Life needs to be embraced. For those of us who are retired it is vital that we find activities in which we can “give back” and provide service to others. All those activities of the past have given us an abundance of knowledge and experience to draw upon in our search for meaningful ways to provide service to others.
Along the same vein we have two special days in May that both celebrate “service to others”. Mother’s Day which is celebrated on the second Sunday in May was initially established in recognition of all women who have made positive contributions to society. Most know that Anna Jarvis held a memorial service honoring her own mother in 1908. The idea caught on and in 1914 Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day to be a national holiday. By that time, Mother’s Day was set aside to instill awareness of the importance of all special women in our lives. Historically, white carnations are associated with the day. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated in 46 countries of the world. Memorial Day is the other very special day occurring on the last Monday of the month. When I was a child, this day was known as Decoration Day and celebrated a long tradition of recognition of those who died in service to our country from as long ago as the Civil War. While initially, it was mainly a southern tradition in which loved ones decorated the graves of their lost soldiers, it quickly caught on in the north and has remained a custom over the years as we included the graves of those who fought in WWI and WWII. Finally, in 1967, congress officially set the day to always occur on the last Monday of May and made it as an official federal holiday. At that time, the name of the day became Memorial Day and officially included all those who have fought for our country. Over the years, many still recognize the importance of honoring those who lost their lives serving their country but now also decorate the graves of all lost loved ones.
In summary, there are many ways one may be called to serve. While most of us will not be demanded
to make the supreme sacrifice, all service is a form of sacrifice and we, as women are
required to give quiet sacrifice in many cases and to lead by example. Let May be a month of
rejoicing for you and those whose lives you impact.
